Three Elva Resa Books Named Finalists in Foreword INDIES Book of the Year Awards

Remote Work for Military Spouses by Laura Briggs, Milspouse Strength by Kendra Lowe, and Semper Parents by Mary Regner Recognized

(St. Paul, MN, March 2023)—Award-winning independent publisher Elva Resa Publishing continues to be recognized for excellence in publishing, with three of its 2022 releases being honored as finalists in the 25th annual Foreword INDIES Book of the Year Awards.

Finalists represent the best books published by university and independent publishers in 2022. More than 2,500 individual titles across 55 genres were submitted for consideration. An expert panel of librarians and booksellers from across the country, representing Foreword Review’s trade readership, will determine the winners based on their experience with readers and patrons.

Winners in each genre, along with Editor’s Choice Prize winners and Foreword’s Independent Publisher of the Year, will be announced June 15, 2023.

“Each of these books addresses an important challenge in the military family community: military spouse employment, military spouse mental health, and the need for extended support for service members’ families, including their parents,” says Elva Resa publisher Karen Pavlicin. “This past year was an especially tough year for many military families, and we are grateful to work with authors who are making a practical difference through their books and advocacy.”

Remote Work for Military Spouses is a road map for military spouses considering remote work to support career continuity, financial stability, and fulfilling work amidst a mobile military lifestyle. Having adapted her career through nine moves with her Navy spouse, author Laura Briggs founded the national nonprofit Operation Freelance, which teaches military spouses how to start their freelance career. Her recent TEDxNormal talk shares some of the career challenges military spouses face and ways employers can be part of the solution.

Military life brings a constant cycle of deployments, relocations, and job changes. The cumulative underlying stress can significantly impact a military spouse’s health and well-being. In Milspouse Strength, author Kendra Lowe, an Air Force veteran, Special Operations military spouse, and trained psychologist, guides readers through understanding positive and negative stress, healthy ways to respond to stressful situations, and ultimately how to transform stress into strength. Kendra also leads international trainings on wellness, stress management, and resiliency.

Semper Parents is a friendly guide to help parents of US Marines understand military life, celebrate traditions, nurture changing relationships, and support their Marine throughout their military career. Author Mary Regner’s experience spans 40 years as a Marine Corps spouse and more than 20 years supporting her Marine son and his family through multiple combat tours and moves. A passionate advocate for military families, Mary has served on several national boards and volunteers with community organizations to support new Marines and their families.

“In addition to exceptional authors, it takes a talented team to create award-winning books,” says Pavlicin. “Our team overcame multiple challenges, including continued supply chain issues that forced back-up plans in order to bring these books to our customers. I appreciate the creative problem-solving by our team as well as our manufacturing partners who maintained quality worthy of these accolades. Thank you Foreword Reviews for highlighting these important resources.”
