Veterans Studies Association logoAs an Honorable Mention recipient, Military Culture Shift will be highlighted at the Veterans Studies Association (VSA)’s 2024 Veterans in Society conference, March 14-15, at the University of South Carolina. VSA promotes and publishes rigorous scholarship about critical issues shaping veterans’ experiences—in any country and any historical era—to enhance public understanding, teaching, service, and advocacy.

On behalf of VSA, Corrine Hinton, PhD, association secretary and chair of the book award selection committee, expressed gratitude to Corie for sharing her voice and experiences, saying, “We believe readers, military and civilian alike, would gain tremendous impact from the insights you share and the connections you draw across generational viewpoints on the military experience and members of the military community.”

A licensed counselor and leadership consultant, Corie drew from her professional work with military families and leaders, more than fifteen years of research, and her own experience as the spouse of an active-duty service member, to write Military Culture Shift. Through narrative history and a generational lens, from World War I to present day, the book explores key contributing factors impacting morale, recruitment, and retention, including the impact of Department of Defense budget decisions, emerging social trends within the military community, and the cumulative effect of two decades of war on military family wellness. Leadership strategies and tips help readers influence positive changes going forward.

“It is an incredible honor to be selected among the many authors writing about and bringing visibility to our military community,” says Corie. “Our nation’s war fighters and their families have given so much to our nation, especially during the longest war in American history. I hope that in shining a light on their story, each of us will find ways to serve our current force while learning to lead the next generation.”
