Historical Fiction: Bring the Story in {Hi}Story to Life
How do we transform the dusty textbook past into a living, breathing world that lifts right off the page? After identifying the top reasons people read historical fiction, we’ll explore how to satisfy their hopes for an immersive setting, historical integrity, nuanced characters, and timeless truths. With strategies, examples, and a few cautions, you’ll come away with new ways to approach and appreciate historical fiction. This session will appeal to readers and writers alike.
BOOK SIGNING, 3–4 PM
(Open to the public, the following books will be available for purchase)
Between Two Shores (Jocelyn’s latest novel)
The daughter of a Mohawk mother and French father in 1759 Montreal, Catherine Duval would rather remain neutral in a world tearing itself apart. Content to trade with both the French and the British, Catherine is pulled into the Seven Years’ War against her wishes when her British ex-fiancé, Samuel Crane, is taken prisoner by her father. Samuel claims he has information that could help end the war, and he asks Catherine to help him escape. Peace appeals to Catherine, even if helping the man who broke her heart does not. But New France is starving, and she and her loved ones may not survive another winter of conflict-induced famine. When the dangers of war arrive on her doorstep, Catherine and Samuel flee by river toward the epicenter of the battle between England and France. She and Samuel may impact history, but she fears the ultimate cost will be higher than she can bear.
The Mark of the King (Jocelyn’s Christy Award-winning novel)
After being imprisoned and branded for the death of her client, midwife Julianne Chevalier trades her life sentence for exile to the fledgling 1720s French colony of Louisiana, where she hopes to be reunited with her brother, serving there as a soldier. To make the journey, though, women must be married, and Julianne is forced to wed a fellow convict. In New Orleans, tragedy strikes, and Julianne must find her way in this dangerous, rugged land, despite never being able to escape the king’s mark on her shoulder that brands her a criminal beyond redemption.
