“We strongly believe in the importance of community and the power of stories to transform lives,” says Elva Resa founder and publisher Karen Pavlicin. “Because of this core value, we tend to attract authors and team members who are passionate advocates. Elva Resa is best known for its award-winning military family resources.
“Our first military family resources focused on deployment,” says Pavlicin, who has also authored several resources based on her experiences as a Marine Corps spouse. “Shortly after our second military family book (Deployment Journal for Kids by Rachel Robertson) came out in 2005, I received a call from a military family support center director. She asked if we ‘do this’—specialize in books for military families. She said there were a lot more resources needed. So in that moment I said, ‘Yes, yes we do.’ And I asked her what she needed most. We started working on those resources right away.” Elva Resa’s strong collaboration within the military community continues be a hallmark of its reputation as a trusted creator of quality resources that make a difference.
In 2006, the company launched an online store, MilitaryFamilyBooks.com, dedicated to matching the needs of military family support organizations with resources from a variety of publishers. Now an independent bookstore and wholesale distributor, Military Family Books is a preferred supplier to military units, family centers, school districts, healthcare organizations, and national nonprofits supporting military families. In addition to its online store, Military Family Books sells via a catalog-based bulk purchasing program and pop-ups at military bases around the world. A portion of profits goes back into the community to support military family programs.
Throughout a year-long anniversary celebration, the Elva Resa team will share stories about the company’s journey and the impact of its resources, and will highlight some of the challenges and rewards of military family life.
