Shawn Hogan is a disabled US Army veteran, speaker, songwriter, and the author of I. C.O.M.M.I.T.: A personal framework for veterans and caregivers on a healing journey.
In 2017, Shawn was struck by a high-speed vehicle during a run, suffering permanent damage to his left arm and hand, a traumatic brain injury, PTSD, depression, and more.
In the darkness of recovery, Shawn committed to rebuilding his life one day at a time. To help himself keep moving forward, he applied his training as a Lean Six Sigma Black Belt to develop a personal framework for making daily intentional choices. He now shares his I. C.O.M.M.I.T. framework and One Day for Life mindset to encourage others on a healing journey.
A healthcare leader at the James A. Haley Veterans’ Hospital in Tampa and recipient of the VISN 8 Employee of the Year Award, Shawn leads transformational initiatives that improve care and experiences for veterans and caregivers.
Shawn speaks to veterans, healthcare organizations, caregiver communities, and recovery groups about resilience, leadership, purpose, and mental wellness. His message reaches far beyond those who have served in uniform, reminding audiences that every person faces unseen battles and has the power to choose hope over despair.
A personal turning point in his own recovery was rediscovering his love for playing the piano. With the help of a specialized glove, Shawn began playing covers by ear using his right hand and left thumb. He began sharing his music and collaborating online as the One Hand Piano Man. He continues to play each morning as a way to release stress, improve memory cognition, exercise his hand, and meditate.
Shawn’s book, speaking engagements, music, podcasts, and social media support his mission to inspire others to commit to living fully, even after tragedy, trauma, or loss—one day at a time.
