SUMMARY:Teri Weber to Speak and Sign Books at 36th Annual Women in Aviation International Conference
DESCRIPTION:Air Force pilot\, mother\, and children’s book author Teri Weber (Operation AviationTM series) is a featured author and educational speaker at the 36th Annual Women in Aviation International (WAI) Conference\, March 27-29\, 2025\, at the Gaylord Rockies Resort & Convention Center\, Denver. \nHer picture books Fly with Mytai\, Toad the Tanker\, and Moose on a Mission will be available for purchase at the on-site bookshop. Teri will sign books at the Authors Connect Meet & Greet on Thursday\, March 27\, 10-11 AM MDT. \nOn Friday\, March 28\, 2:30–3:30 PM MDT\, Teri will lead an educational session titled “Work-Life Integration: The New and Improved Work-Life Balance.” The term “work-life balance” implies two distinctly separate priorities\, but this way of thinking is antiquated and unaccommodating to modern women. Two of the most important elements of life—family and career—do not innately conflict with one another. To foster stronger relationships with loved ones and minimize stressors associated with competing agendas\, we should be instead pursuing “work-life integration.” In this session\, Teri will discuss how to deliberately blur the lines between “work” and “life” to create a more enmeshed\, inclusive\, and sustainable lifestyle for professional women and their families. \nOn Saturday\, March 29\, Teri will attend Girls in Aviation Day\, which brings together girls ages 8-18 for an empowering career panel featuring leading ladies in aviation and aerospace. The Aviation for Girls crew will experience more than 25 unique hands-on STEM activities related to aviation\, flight\, science\, technology\, navigation\, space\, and more lead by role models in the industry. During lunch\, attendees will hear about the career journey of keynote speaker Jessica Cox\, who will encourage attendees to reach for their dreams and design their own destinies. \nThe Women in Aviation International Conference is an annual event that offers networking and mentorship within the aviation industry to approximately 15\,000 participants. \nFind the full conference schedule and registration at the Women in Aviation website.

SUMMARY:JT Blatty Signs Snapshots Sent Home Memoir at Octavia Books\, Sat. Feb. 24\, 2024
DESCRIPTION:Documentary photojournalist JT Blatty will read from her new book\, Snapshots Sent Home: From Afghanistan\, Iraq\, Ukraine—A Memoir\, and talk about her experiences as a US combat veteran and photographer in Ukraine\, at a booksigning event hosted by Octavia Books\, 511 Octavia St\, New Orleans\, on Saturday\, February 24\, 4–5:30 PM Central Time. The event takes place on the second anniversary of the full-scale Russian invasion of Ukraine. \nLike many post-9/11 combat veterans\, JT Blatty struggled to regain her sense of purpose in the years returning home from Afghanistan and Iraq. Then\, in 2018\, a chance encounter brought her to Ukraine as a documentary photojournalist\, drawn in by the familiarity of war and those who serve in wars. She discovered Ukraine’s volunteer soldiers\, a tribe of revolutionaries\, ordinary men and women\, most without military training\, who in 2014 self-deployed to the War in the Donbas in eastern Ukraine. Over five years\, as she embedded with them on the front line in bunkers and forests\, and in Kyiv flats\, creating a photographic/audio archive\, JT’s story began to blend with theirs in a universal bond of combat veterans\, compelling her to stay as a new war began. \n“… Snapshots Sent Home is an intimate\, finely-written memoir about the truths and realities shared by soldiers everywhere. Moving between the author’s experiences in Ukraine\, where she lives and works as a photographer\, and before that in Iraq and Afghanistan\, where she served as a US military officer\, Blatty ruminates about the nature of comradeship\, patriotism\, longing\, loss\, life and death; memory and love. ‘Butterflies on fire’ is a phrase that makes a debut too\, but you will have to read this devastatingly moving book to understand its meaning. Snapshots Sent Home should be read by anyone who cares about what we do on history’s battlefields\, and about how we process what we have done afterwards. This is a lot more than a book about snapshots. And JT Blatty is a lot more than a photographer and former soldier. She is a helluva writer too\, and I am certain that what she says here will stay on in readers’ minds for a long time to come.” —Jon Lee Anderson\, staff writer\, The New Yorker; author of Che Guevara and The Fall of Baghdad \nBooks will be available for sale at the event through Octavia Books.

SUMMARY:Veterans Experience Project Showcases Photos by JT Blatty\, November 11\, 2022\, New Orleans
DESCRIPTION:JT Blatty\, author of the forthcoming memoir Snapshots Sent Home (Elva Resa\, 2023)\, will read excerpts from her manuscript and talk about her photojournalist exhibit “Front Line\, Peace Life” during Bastion Community of Resilience’s Veterans Experience Project (VEP). Sponsored by Got Your Six\, a Bob Woodruff Foundation Initiative\, VEP takes place Friday\, November 11\, 2022\, 10 AM—6 PM Central\, at Gallier Hall\, 545 Saint Charles Ave\, New Orleans. \nThe hands-on event explores diverse military experiences through artistic expression and interactive exhibits\, including visual art\, the written and spoken word\, performances and curated discussion panels\, followed by a dialogue with the audience to provide further understanding into the servicemember experiences. A number of nationally renowned veterans will be presenting at VEP. \nJT will take the main stage at 1:30 PM. As a photojournalist\, JT’s work has been featured in many publications\, including Bloomberg\, Oxford American\, and The Daily Beast. She spent the past four years in Ukraine. “Front Line\, Peace Life” shares the stories of Ukrainian volunteer soldiers fighting to preserve their country’s democracy. \nBastion is an intentional community for returning warriors and families with life-altering injuries\, with a mission to provide a supportive living environment for injured veterans and families and a holistic approach to community integration. \nThe event is free and open to the public. For more information about Veterans Experience Project\, visit JoinBastion.org. \n*Photo with this event posting is a portrait titled Yulya “Valkyrie” Tolopa by JT Blatty. \nValkyrie crossed the Ukrainian border from Russia in 2014\, when she was 18\, inspired to understand the true events of the Maidan revolution versus reports from the Russian media. By June she was on a bus heading to the frontline to fight with the Ukrainians against the Russian invasion. She joined the Aydar Volunteer Battalion and helped liberate and defend towns in the Luhansk region until 2015. She served on the frontline in the Ukrainian Armed Forces as a Russian citizen until 2019\, protected by Ukraine from Russia’s request for extradition. She finally received Ukrainian citizenship in 2022\, after a six-year battle fighting Ukraine’s law requiring her to renounce her foreign citizenship on Russian territory\, where she is not safe and is wanted as a traitor.

SUMMARY:Lightfoot on Military Spouse Panel at IAM Conference\, Oct. 15\, 2021
DESCRIPTION:Lizann Lightfoot\, author of Open When: Letters of Encouragement for Military Spouses\, will be a panelist speaker at the International Association of Movers (IAM) Conference in Orlando\, Florida\, on Friday\, Oct. 15\, 2021\, 10:30–11:30 AM Eastern. \nLizann’s panel is part of a new IAM military track\, where professional moving companies can learn more about the details and specific challenges of military moves. For the first time\, a panel of military spouses will speak to conference participants to improve communication between military families and moving companies. Lizann is one of three military spouses selected to speak on this panel. \nSession description:\nIAM Learning Lab: Military Spouse Perspectives on the DoD Moving Process \n\n\nJoin us for this special\, first-ever session where we feature a panel of military spouses to discuss the moving process from their perspectives. Hear what it’s like from their eyes; and how it might be different from what a non-DoD family experiences in their move. What makes for a successful move? What increases their stress during an already stressful time? Ask them questions and make sure you understand a military move from their side of the process. \n\n\nThe panel will be live for those attending in person\, and also streamed on the IAM website for those with a virtual registration.

Content to trade with both the French and the British\, Catherine is pulled into the Seven Years’ War against her wishes when her British ex-fiancé\, Samuel Crane\, is taken prisoner by her father. Samuel claims he has information that could help end the war\, and he asks Catherine to help him escape. Peace appeals to Catherine\, even if helping the man who broke her heart does not. But New France is starving\, and she and her loved ones may not survive another winter of conflict-induced famine. When the dangers of war arrive on her doorstep\, Catherine and Samuel flee by river toward the epicenter of the battle between England and France. She and Samuel may impact history\, but she fears the ultimate cost will be higher than she can bear. \nThe Mark of the King (Jocelyn’s Christy Award-winning novel)\nAfter being imprisoned and branded for the death of her client\, midwife Julianne Chevalier trades her life sentence for exile to the fledgling 1720s French colony of Louisiana\, where she hopes to be reunited with her brother\, serving there as a soldier. To make the journey\, though\, women must be married\, and Julianne is forced to wed a fellow convict. In New Orleans\, tragedy strikes\, and Julianne must find her way in this dangerous\, rugged land\, despite never being able to escape the king’s mark on her shoulder that brands her a criminal beyond redemption. \nABOUT JOCELYN\nJocelyn Green inspires faith and courage as the award-winning and bestselling author of numerous fiction and nonfiction books\, including The Mark of the King; Wedded to War; Stories Around the Table: Laughter\, Wisdom\, and Strength in Military Life\, which she coauthored with fellow military family writers; and The 5 Love Languages Military Edition\, which she coauthored with bestselling author Dr. Gary Chapman. SUMMARY:Pavlicin-Fragnito Speaks at IBPA's Publishing University\, April 5-6\, 2019
DESCRIPTION:Karen Pavlicin-Fragnito\, publisher at Elva Resa and a current Independent Book Publishers Association national board member\, will speak on two panels at IBPA’s Publishing University. She’ll join other industry experts to discuss educational publishing and special sales markets. Both sessions are geared toward intermediate-experienced publishers. \nKaren will also participate in 1-on-1 Ask the Expert mentoring sessions on Saturday (preregistration required) and will host various gatherings throughout the event as an IBPA board member. She will represent Elva Resa\, along with senior editor Terri Barnes\, at the Benjamin Franklin Awards dinner\, where Elva Resa’s book Seasons of My Military Student is a finalist. \nThe premier educational event for independent publishers\, Pub U will be held Friday and Saturday\, April 5-6\, 2019\, with pre-conference sessions on Thursday\, April 4. All sessions will be held at the Chicago Marriott Downtown Magnificent Mile\, 540 Michigan Avenue\, Chicago\, Illinois. \nThe Many Facets of Educational Publishing\nFriday\, April 5\, 3:15 PM – 4:15 PM Central \nEducation is one of the book industry’s leading market segments. K-12\, life-long learning products\, and community and corporate training materials are glimpses into the lucrative and fulfilling world of educational publishing. Richard Lena of Brattle Publishing\, Ian Lamont of i30 Media\, and Karen Pavlicin-Fragnito of Elva Resa Publishing have had significant experience publishing for different segments of this market and approach learning from their own unique perspectives. In this session\, they will share their strategies for entering various facets of the market\, instructional design and development practices for products and services\, and marketing and distribution outlets. They will also spend time answering your questions about this significant portion of the publishing industry. The session is intended for intermediate participants who are seeking to learn about educational publishing and considering expanding into an education segment. \nSelling Outside the Box: Why Special Sales Should Always Be In Your Plans\nSaturday\, April 6\, 1:15 PM – 2:15 PM Central \nPublishers typically focus on how to get their books into bookstores\, but some of the biggest selling titles have made their money outside of box–or big box—storefronts. From crowdfunding to niche vendors\, there are great ways to connect with new revenue streams\, have less competition for your products\, and stand out instead of being part of a crowd. \nWorking special sales channels can make a huge difference in a title’s success while helping to drive sales in more traditional outlets\, as well. Plus\, special sales are often nonreturnable\, reducing your risk. But how do you identify your niche special sales markets? This panel of experts will show you how they found money thinking outside the box. Panelists include Karen Pavlicin-Fragnito\, publisher at Elva Resa Publishing; Kelly Peterson\, director of client services at INscribe Digital\, a division of Independent Publishers Group; Richard Williams\, vice president of publisher development at Independent Publishers Group; and Gail Woodard\, president at Dudley Court Press. \nRegistration costs range from $35 for a small group breakfast to $395 for full conference member registration. SUMMARY:Barnes Shares Column-Writing Insights at National High School Journalism Convention
DESCRIPTION:Terri Barnes\, Elva Resa’s senior editor and the creator of a popular and long-running column in Stars and Stripes\, spoke to a room full of student journalists who filled the seats and sat in the aisles to hear about the importance of columns in news publications and the craft of column-writing. \nBarnes led a workshop called “Becoming A Columnist” at the Spring National High School Journalism Convention in San Francisco \, California\, April 14\, 2018. She also served alongside other journalists and educators as a judge for the Write-Off Contest at the convention\, which is co-sponsored by the Journalist Education Association and the National Scholastic Press Association. With more than 4\,000 delegates from hundreds of schools\, the JEA/NSPA convention is the largest gathering of student journalists in the country. \n“I was so impressed by the caliber of writing I saw in some of the contest entries and by the thoughtful questions that came from the workshop\,” says Barnes. “As well as column-writing\, we talked about the Florida students who reported first-hand about the Parkland shooting and the importance of a free press in a free nation.” \nBarnes is the author of Spouse Calls: Messages From a Military Life\, a collection of her newspaper columns. \nIn the workshop\, she read excerpts from her own work and other columnists after opening the session by reading an excerpt from Lewis Carroll’s Alice in Wonderland. Barnes says Carroll’s word play and use of riddles and questions provide excellent opportunities to talk to writers about word choice and asking questions. She has spoken to many groups about writing\, including students from grade school to university level\, both in the US and overseas.
