DESCRIPTION:Stories Around the Table coauthors Chris Pape and Lori Volkman will lead a Stories Experience for Military Spouse of the Year (MSOY) Award recipients at the Military Spouse Magazine Town Hall on Thursday\, May 7\, 2015\, in Crystal City\, Virginia. \nThe Town Hall gives MSOY recipients an opportunity to learn about and discuss key issues affecting military spouses. All MSOY recipients from bases around the world are invited to attend. Each will receive a copy of the book Stories Around the Table: Laughter\, Wisdom\, and Strength in Military Life and a guide for leading Stories Experiences in their own communities. \nChris will talk about the importance of sharing personal stories and experience as a means of supporting fellow military spouses. He will share his story as a male spouse deciding to live off base. \nLori will share her story “Marriage Pig Latin” about reuniting with her husband after a long deployment. \nAll attendees will have an opportunity to share their MSOY story and learn more about ways to use a Stories Experience in their community to support military families. \nChris and Lori will be available at the Stories Experience booth during Town Hall breaks to sign books and collaborate with attendees in support of their individual platforms and advocacy topics. \nAdditional speakers at the event include Rosemary Williams\, Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense for Military Community and Family Policy; Lakesha Cole\, 2014 Military Spouse of the Year; Ingrid Herrera-Yee\, 2014 National Guard SOY; Tammy Meyer\, 2014 Navy Spouse of the Year; Rosye Cloud\, VA Department; Teresa Gerton\, Department of Labor; and several representatives from military family service organizations.

The writers festival connects budding and established writers with published authors and other experts in the field to share information\, techniques\, skills\, and resources. \nThe festival begins at 9:30 with a keynote from Graywolf Press’s executive editor\, Jeff Schotts. Graywolf Press is a Twin Cities small independent press that has produced authors who have won the Nobel Peace Prize\, the Noble Prize for Literature\, Pulitzer Prizes\, National Book Awards\, and more. The festival also includes more than twenty workshops ($15 each) that cover the business and art of writing. Stafford Library preschool storytime as part of Washington County’s Month of the Military Child Purple Up! events. Two reading times are scheduled: Monday\, April 14 and Thursday\, April 17\, both 10:30-11 AM Central\, in the children’s section of the library\, located in Central Park\, Woodbury\, Minnesota. \nReading selections will include Pavlicin-Fragnito’s poem “Love Letters” in Military Life: Stories and Poems for Children\, the picture book The Wishing Tree by Mary Redman\, Dr. Jill Biden’s book Don’t Forget\, God Bless Our Troops\, Mommy Wears a Uniform by Shunsee Wilson\, Night Catch by Brenda Ehrmantraut\, and other books that celebrate and give a glimpse into the lives of military children. \nWashington County Library is celebrating Month of the Military Child with Purple Up! events planned for branch libraries throughout the county. April was designated Month of the Military Child by Secretary of Defense Caspar W. Weinberger in 1986 to honor the important role children play in the Armed Forces community. There are approximately 2 million military children\, ranging in ages from newborn to 18 years old; 1.3 million military children are school-aged. \nThe reading event is free and open to the public. Children ages 3 to 5 and their parents are encouraged to attend and to wear purple to honor all service branches.
