SUMMARY:Pavlicin-Fragnito Speaks at IBPA's Publishing University\, April 5-6\, 2019
DESCRIPTION:Karen Pavlicin-Fragnito\, publisher at Elva Resa and a current Independent Book Publishers Association national board member\, will speak on two panels at IBPA’s Publishing University. She’ll join other industry experts to discuss educational publishing and special sales markets. Both sessions are geared toward intermediate-experienced publishers. \nKaren will also participate in 1-on-1 Ask the Expert mentoring sessions on Saturday (preregistration required) and will host various gatherings throughout the event as an IBPA board member. She will represent Elva Resa\, along with senior editor Terri Barnes\, at the Benjamin Franklin Awards dinner\, where Elva Resa’s book Seasons of My Military Student is a finalist. \nThe premier educational event for independent publishers\, Pub U will be held Friday and Saturday\, April 5-6\, 2019\, with pre-conference sessions on Thursday\, April 4. All sessions will be held at the Chicago Marriott Downtown Magnificent Mile\, 540 Michigan Avenue\, Chicago\, Illinois. \nThe Many Facets of Educational Publishing\nFriday\, April 5\, 3:15 PM – 4:15 PM Central \nEducation is one of the book industry’s leading market segments. K-12\, life-long learning products\, and community and corporate training materials are glimpses into the lucrative and fulfilling world of educational publishing. Richard Lena of Brattle Publishing\, Ian Lamont of i30 Media\, and Karen Pavlicin-Fragnito of Elva Resa Publishing have had significant experience publishing for different segments of this market and approach learning from their own unique perspectives. In this session\, they will share their strategies for entering various facets of the market\, instructional design and development practices for products and services\, and marketing and distribution outlets. They will also spend time answering your questions about this significant portion of the publishing industry. The session is intended for intermediate participants who are seeking to learn about educational publishing and considering expanding into an education segment. \nSelling Outside the Box: Why Special Sales Should Always Be In Your Plans\nSaturday\, April 6\, 1:15 PM – 2:15 PM Central \nPublishers typically focus on how to get their books into bookstores\, but some of the biggest selling titles have made their money outside of box–or big box—storefronts. From crowdfunding to niche vendors\, there are great ways to connect with new revenue streams\, have less competition for your products\, and stand out instead of being part of a crowd. \nWorking special sales channels can make a huge difference in a title’s success while helping to drive sales in more traditional outlets\, as well. Plus\, special sales are often nonreturnable\, reducing your risk. But how do you identify your niche special sales markets? This panel of experts will show you how they found money thinking outside the box. Panelists include Karen Pavlicin-Fragnito\, publisher at Elva Resa Publishing; Kelly Peterson\, director of client services at INscribe Digital\, a division of Independent Publishers Group; Richard Williams\, vice president of publisher development at Independent Publishers Group; and Gail Woodard\, president at Dudley Court Press. \nRegistration costs range from $35 for a small group breakfast to $395 for full conference member registration. Register online at PublishingUniversity.org.

SUMMARY:Barnes Shares Column-Writing Insights at National High School Journalism Convention
DESCRIPTION:Terri Barnes\, Elva Resa’s senior editor and the creator of a popular and long-running column in Stars and Stripes\, spoke to a room full of student journalists who filled the seats and sat in the aisles to hear about the importance of columns in news publications and the craft of column-writing. \nBarnes led a workshop called “Becoming A Columnist” at the Spring National High School Journalism Convention in San Francisco \, California\, April 14\, 2018. She also served alongside other journalists and educators as a judge for the Write-Off Contest at the convention\, which is co-sponsored by the Journalist Education Association and the National Scholastic Press Association. With more than 4\,000 delegates from hundreds of schools\, the JEA/NSPA convention is the largest gathering of student journalists in the country. \n“I was so impressed by the caliber of writing I saw in some of the contest entries and by the thoughtful questions that came from the workshop\,” says Barnes. “As well as column-writing\, we talked about the Florida students who reported first-hand about the Parkland shooting and the importance of a free press in a free nation.” \nBarnes is the author of Spouse Calls: Messages From a Military Life\, a collection of her newspaper columns. \nIn the workshop\, she read excerpts from her own work and other columnists after opening the session by reading an excerpt from Lewis Carroll’s Alice in Wonderland. Barnes says Carroll’s word play and use of riddles and questions provide excellent opportunities to talk to writers about word choice and asking questions. She has spoken to many groups about writing\, including students from grade school to university level\, both in the US and overseas.
