With strategies\, examples\, and a few cautions\, you’ll come away with new ways to approach and appreciate historical fiction. This session will appeal to readers and writers alike. \nBOOK SIGNING\, 3–4 PM\n(Open to the public\, the following books will be available for purchase) \nBetween Two Shores (Jocelyn’s latest novel)\nThe daughter of a Mohawk mother and French father in 1759 Montreal\, Catherine Duval would rather remain neutral in a world tearing itself apart. Content to trade with both the French and the British\, Catherine is pulled into the Seven Years’ War against her wishes when her British ex-fiancé\, Samuel Crane\, is taken prisoner by her father. Samuel claims he has information that could help end the war\, and he asks Catherine to help him escape. Peace appeals to Catherine\, even if helping the man who broke her heart does not. But New France is starving\, and she and her loved ones may not survive another winter of conflict-induced famine. When the dangers of war arrive on her doorstep\, Catherine and Samuel flee by river toward the epicenter of the battle between England and France. She and Samuel may impact history\, but she fears the ultimate cost will be higher than she can bear. \nThe Mark of the King (Jocelyn’s Christy Award-winning novel)\nAfter being imprisoned and branded for the death of her client\, midwife Julianne Chevalier trades her life sentence for exile to the fledgling 1720s French colony of Louisiana\, where she hopes to be reunited with her brother\, serving there as a soldier. To make the journey\, though\, women must be married\, and Julianne is forced to wed a fellow convict. In New Orleans\, tragedy strikes\, and Julianne must find her way in this dangerous\, rugged land\, despite never being able to escape the king’s mark on her shoulder that brands her a criminal beyond redemption. \nABOUT JOCELYN\nJocelyn Green inspires faith and courage as the award-winning and bestselling author of numerous fiction and nonfiction books\, including The Mark of the King; Wedded to War; Stories Around the Table: Laughter\, Wisdom\, and Strength in Military Life\, which she coauthored with fellow military family writers; and The 5 Love Languages Military Edition\, which she coauthored with bestselling author Dr. Gary Chapman. SUMMARY:JT Blatty Signs Snapshots Sent Home Memoir at Octavia Books\, Sat. Feb. 24\, 2024
DESCRIPTION:Documentary photojournalist JT Blatty will read from her new book\, Snapshots Sent Home: From Afghanistan\, Iraq\, Ukraine—A Memoir\, and talk about her experiences as a US combat veteran and photographer in Ukraine\, at a booksigning event hosted by Octavia Books\, 511 Octavia St\, New Orleans\, on Saturday\, February 24\, 4–5:30 PM Central Time. The event takes place on the second anniversary of the full-scale Russian invasion of Ukraine. \nLike many post-9/11 combat veterans\, JT Blatty struggled to regain her sense of purpose in the years returning home from Afghanistan and Iraq. Then\, in 2018\, a chance encounter brought her to Ukraine as a documentary photojournalist\, drawn in by the familiarity of war and those who serve in wars. She discovered Ukraine’s volunteer soldiers\, a tribe of revolutionaries\, ordinary men and women\, most without military training\, who in 2014 self-deployed to the War in the Donbas in eastern Ukraine. Over five years\, as she embedded with them on the front line in bunkers and forests\, and in Kyiv flats\, creating a photographic/audio archive\, JT’s story began to blend with theirs in a universal bond of combat veterans\, compelling her to stay as a new war began. \n“… Snapshots Sent Home is an intimate\, finely-written memoir about the truths and realities shared by soldiers everywhere. Moving between the author’s experiences in Ukraine\, where she lives and works as a photographer\, and before that in Iraq and Afghanistan\, where she served as a US military officer\, Blatty ruminates about the nature of comradeship\, patriotism\, longing\, loss\, life and death; memory and love. ‘Butterflies on fire’ is a phrase that makes a debut too\, but you will have to read this devastatingly moving book to understand its meaning. Snapshots Sent Home should be read by anyone who cares about what we do on history’s battlefields\, and about how we process what we have done afterwards. This is a lot more than a book about snapshots. And JT Blatty is a lot more than a photographer and former soldier. She is a helluva writer too\, and I am certain that what she says here will stay on in readers’ minds for a long time to come.” —Jon Lee Anderson\, staff writer\, The New Yorker; author of Che Guevara and The Fall of Baghdad \nBooks will be available for sale at the event through Octavia Books.
